Swords of Damoclese

The Swords of Damoclese is tensegrity arc in the tradition of Kenneth Snelson. This seemingly impossible sculpture invites the viewer to take a longer look. To turn, to calm and to wonder. According to an ancient Greek story, above the throne of King Dionysius, a sword is suspended by a single horse hair, demonstrating how power is insecure. Unlike the metal sword in the story, these swords are wooden and of the type typically used to practice tai chi, showing how – when used with balance and contemplation – the weapons can be used also to heal. The color combination is inspired by Josef Albers’ study Lux 1963, from the Homage to the Square series. As if looking at sequential scenes in a film strip, the colors show movement through time..
